Save the Sparrows: Aitchison College's Mission to Protect a Vanishing Species

The Preparatory School, Aitchison College, in collaboration with the Departments of Art and Science, is on a mission to instill love and awareness for indigenous sparrows—a species now teetering on the brink of extinction. These small and harmless birds are disappearing at an alarming rate due to habitat loss, environmental changes, and increased vulnerability to predators.

To combat this crisis, our students have embarked on a meaningful initiative. They began by researching the challenges sparrows face in today’s rapidly changing world. Inspired by their findings, they took action—installing bird nests across the campus, advocating for the release of caged sparrows, and fostering a culture of empathy and environmental stewardship.

But their efforts didn’t stop there. To spread awareness and creativity, our students designed insightful comic strips depicting the sparrow’s life journey—its struggles, fading habitats, and most importantly, the hope for its survival. Through art, science, and true compassion, Aitchison College is nurturing a generation committed to protecting these beautiful birds before it’s too late. Pre-C1 Open House Chemistry Competition, 2025

On May 19, 2025, the Senior School, Chemistry Department hosted the Pre-C1 Open House Chemistry Competition in the Tiwana Building. Our students showcased their enthusiasm and expertise in the Molecular Modelling competition. This event highlighted their skills in molecular modelling, which serves as a crucial foundation for molecular dynamics simulations and AI-driven design techniques.

A three-hour session on "Understanding 21st Century Skills"

The Teaching & Learning Centre (TLC) at Aitchison College organised a workshop on "Understanding 21^st Century Skills" on Saturday, May 17, 2025 by Taimur Bandey at the AJ Innovation Centre. With 26 years of education experience in various capacities Bandey led the session for 27 junior school teachers. 5 teachers from the Campus Girls School were invited as well.

During the workshop, participants engaged with essential Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, focusing on social skills to develop positive interpersonal relationships and enhance social-emotional intelligence. The session also covered research skills aimed at improving information and media literacy, alongside the ethical use of resources. Communication skills were emphasised to enhance information exchange and ICT literacy, while self-management skills were addressed to foster better organisational abilities.

Moreover, the workshop highlighted effective Approaches to Teaching, emphasising inquiry-based learning and conceptual understanding. These approaches were developed to address both local and global contexts, promote effective teamwork and collaboration, and ensure differentiation to meet the diverse needs of all learners.

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the integration of teaching methods and the real-life relevance showcased throughout the session. This workshop fostered a collaborative environment for professional growth.

Aitchisonians Shine

Our students participated in a two-day Innovation Camp held at the University of Lahore and the Beacon House Head Office, where they showcased their creativity and entrepreneurial ideas. During the JA Worldwide Innovation Camp, they presented innovative business models aimed at solving pressing societal challenges:

Omar Ali Malik won first place with his Bio Pack project, which aims to transform sugar industry waste into eco-friendly packaging.
Ahsan Farooq earned second place for his Green Rick Project, which provides cost-effective electric conversion kits for rickshaws.

Additionally, two of our teachers, Mr. Ahmer and Ms. Nida, aptly represented Aitchison at a JA Worldwide workshop. They gained valuable insights into upcoming initiatives and further strengthened their commitment to fostering an entrepreneurial mindset within our students.

The Francophonie National Competition, 2025

The Francophonie National Competition 2025 was held in April in Islamabad. It was a vibrant celebration of French language and Francophone culture in Pakistan. Organised by the French Embassy in collaboration with the Alliance Française of Lahore and Islamabad, the event brought together students, educators, and Francophone enthusiasts from across the country. The competition served as a platform to promote French language and foster intercultural dialogue, aligning with the global objectives of the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.

Participants showcased their talents in various categories, including singing, poetry, and acting. All performances were in French, highlighting the linguistic diversity and cultural richness of the Francophone world.

More than three hundred guests and eleven embassies took part in this event. Before the national event in Islamabad, regional events took place in various cities of Pakistan. One of our students, Aahil Saleem Nasir of Pre-C1, represented Aitchison College and won 1st position in the Youth Category. He was declared the national winner!

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including the Ambassador of France, Nicolas Galey, the Ambassador of Belgium, Idesbald van der Gracht, the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Tunisia, Dorsaf Maaroufi, the First Secretary at the Embassy of Switzerland, Claudia Thomas; and the First Secretary at the High Commission of Canada, Fenny Hum. Their presence underscored the importance of linguistic and cultural exchange in strengthening international relations. Ambassador Galey emphasised the role of French language in building closer ties between Pakistan and Francophone nations, highlighting the growing interest in French among Pakistani youth. The competition not only celebrated linguistic proficiency but also encouraged creativity and cultural appreciation, contributing to the broader mission of promoting diversity and mutual understanding among nations.

Ceramics Making for Financial Growth

On Friday, April 25th, 2025, Campus Boys and Girls students visited the Government College of Technology for Ceramics and Glass Making. During the visit, they participated in a hands-on ceramics workshop and learnt professional techniques and practices. The initiative exposed them to the art and craft of ceramics and glassmaking. It was a real-world experience that inspired them to recognise how creative skills can be harnessed for entrepreneurial opportunities and income generation.

Amir Mazari Battles Through the Tennis Tournament to Claim Silver

One of our ace tennis stars, Amir Mazari, participated in the Asian Tennis Rankings under-16 Championships in Kazakhstan, Shymkent. The best players from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Russia, Pakistan, and India participated. After a long and gruelling competition, Mazari emerged as a finalist in the Doubles Category along with his partner from Kyrgyzstan, Roman Kim. He earned a silver medal for the country and Aitchison.

Turning Over a New Leaf: Transition Session for Pre-C1 Boarders

On Sunday, 4th May 2025, Senior School organised a meaningful and interactive session titled “Transition from Prep to Senior School” for its Pre-C1 boarders. It aimed at equipping students with the emotional and practical readiness needed for the next phase of their academic journey. The session was led by Mr. Khalid Saifullah, Housemaster of Kelly House. During the session, he shared valuable insights on the stages of transition and their psychological impact on young learners. He underscored the importance of communication, resilience, adaptability, and maintaining a positive mindset, offering practical strategies to help students navigate the shift with confidence. Adding a student-led dimension to the discussion, School Prefect Syed Muneer Ahmed (Kelly House) spoke about the significance of mutual respect, valuing teachers, healthy sports competition, and fostering brotherhood within the school community. The session concluded with an open forum where boarders expressed their thoughts, concerns, and aspirations, creating a space for honest reflection and peer connection. The event acted as an important milestone in helping students step into Senior School life with clarity and confidence.

Screen Printing Workshop

On Saturday, April 26^th, the Aitchison College Preparatory School Art Department organized a valuable workshop. Students from the Campus School, both boys and girls, eagerly participated. The main topic of the workshop was Screen Printing. It aimed to teach our students how to use this technique to generate a viable income. Students practically assisted the teachers in conducting the workshop. This initiative represented a significant step toward fostering entrepreneurial skills among the students.

Workshop on Generative AI for Educators

On Friday, April 24^th, 2025, Aitchison College Prep School organised a future-focused professional development workshop titled "Generative AI for Educators". The workshop provided our faculty members with a chance to learn about the increasing use of AI tools to enhance teaching and learning experiences. From hands-on demos to ethics and innovation discussions, the workshop invited teachers to think about how tools like ChatGPT can:

Help with lesson planning and differentiated instruction
Develop effective learning materials
Promote personalised and inclusive instructions

This project endorses Aitchison College's continued interest in preparing educators with resources for 21st-century learning.

Annual Dinner of Saigol and Monnoo Houses

The Annual Dinner of Saigol House and Monnoo House was held on Friday, 18^th April 2025. It was a time of celebration and enjoyment as the boys received recognition for their hard work in academics and sports. They were also praised and awarded for their discipline throughout the year. The event began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the Housemasters' speeches and the distribution of the prizes. Dr S. M. Turab Hussain, the principal, also gave a nostalgic speech, sharing his unforgettable memories associated with Saigol House when he, in his school days, resided there as a boarder. After a scrumptious dinner, the boys from both Houses entertained the audience with their performances in plays, music, singing, a news bulletin, and other skills. It was an enjoyable and memorable evening.

Educational Trip to Nandipur

On 26^th April 2025, the Prep School's Mathematics Department organised an educational tour to the Irrigation Research Institute and the Hydel and Thermal Power Stations in Nandipur. At the Research Institute, the students explored the hydraulic models of various water resource projects and witnessed the operation of some of them. These models illustrated how things are scaled down and proportioned to manageable limits, enabling a convenient study of the actual projects, which are twenty to eighty times the models' size. The visit offered a practical demonstration of mathematical concepts, particularly geometry and scale modeling, as students noted the diverse geometric shapes incorporated into the designs.

Later, at the Hydel and Thermal Power Stations, the students experienced firsthand real-world infrastructure projects' vast scale and complexity. They gained insights into the operation of large-scale power generation facilities, how critical systems are monitored and controlled, and the challenges engineers face in maintaining and optimizing such installations. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect theoretical knowledge with practical applications, enhancing their understanding of both mathematics and engineering practices.
